When Mayhew Folger arrived at Pitcairn in 1808, Hannah met them at the top of the hill overlooking Bounty Bay. The visitors had the intuition that she had come to test out the situation, so that ample warning could be given to her father to escape if their attitude seemed hostile. The younger officers evinced as much if not more interest in Hannah than in her rather notorious parent . . . in the words of one of them, 'She was arrayed in nature's simple garb, and wholly unadorned, but she was beauty's self.' She betrayed some surprise as timidity was a prominent feature. (Shapiro: Heritage of he Bounty). She was one of the 14 women who invited Admiral Fairfax Moresby to visit Pitcairn in 1851. In 1856, on Norfolk, she was described by Mrs. Patteson as 'a really magnificent woman, like a queen. She had long black hair flowing to her waist, although 65 years of age.' Adams, John, Lareau, thePeerage.com

John Adams was born November 4, 1766, in St. John's Hackney, Middlesex, England. He died March 14, 1829, on Pitcairn Island at the age of 61 years. John Adams was also known as Alexander Smith. He and Teehuteatuaonoa (?) were associated circa 1788 on Tubuai. He and Puarei (?) were associated circa 1790 on Pitcairn Island. He gained the rank of Able Seaman in the service of the Royal Navy on board H.M.A.V. Bounty. He and Tinafanaea (?), Vahineatua (?), and Mareva (?) were associated on Pitcairn Island. Adams was either from Wapping-on-Thames or Stanford Hill, St. John Hackney, Middlesex in England. His father, a lighterman and servant to Daniel Bell Cole, a merchant, drowned in the River Thames. He and three siblings were left orphaned, and he and two siblings were brought up in the poorhouse. One sibling married soon after the father's death. It was in the poorhouse that Adams gained what little literacy he had before being tutored by Young on Pitcairn. It is also where he learned the rudiments of the liturgy of the Church of England. One brother was a waterman at Union Stairs, a "steady character, and wore the fire coat of London Assurance." Adams belonged to that class of individuals, who, under ordinary circumstances, would likely attract public attention only when picked up by the police. Known as "reckless Jack," he was not the toughest, meekest, nor least intelligent of the crew. Certainly not afraid to "go for the cutlass," he learned survival in the streets of London. One of the active mutineer party, he was part of the group that arrested Bligh. He was not in the leadership, but there was no question as to where his sympathies lay. On Pitcairn, he formed a close friendship with Young, and lives as neighbors, sharing possessions and women between themselves. They had also the most-even handed attitude toward the Tahitian men. He was scarcely literate, and as he noted Young's Illness, he took reading lessons each day from his companion, knowing that he would soon be responsible for the growing community. It was at Young's death that this non-religious sailor found himself, for the first time, having to officiate at the burial services, and from that point on took his responsibilities very seriously. Adams found himself alone among a community in which only he had an experience of the outside world. Early visitors reported him as kindly, wise, thoroughly regenerated, and a deeply religious and moral patriarch. This is likely not far from the truth. He was indeed a completely regenerated rascal - whether this was due to a deep moral direction or from simply expediency in controlling an island teeming with the young will be forever unknown. We have only his own words to judge what he did, and we have the survival of a strong, religious, vital colony that he left in his wake. Bligh described him as 5'5' tall, brown complexion, brown hair, strong made, very much pitted with smallpox, and very much tattooed on body, arms, legs and feet. He had a scar on his right foot where it was cut with a wood axe. The children of John Adams and Vahineatua (?) were Dinah Adams, born in 1796, and died January 18, 1864; Rachel Adams, born in 1797, and died September 7, 1876; and Hannah Adams, born in 1799, and died on August 27, 1864. When John Evans asked for her hand, he did not meet with much success. Her father did not approve of people marrying too young, and Evans was only 19, and the disparity in their ages was also an obstacle. However the matter was referred to Rachael for decision, and her answer came quickly, "Try it, Daddy." At length he reconsidered, and they were wedded with a ring formed of the outer circle of a limpet shell. The children of Rachael and John Evens were: John Valentine Mansell Evans, born Jan. 12, 1829, died 1892; William Evans, born Aug. 8, 1830, died Mar. 3, 1873; Mary Evans, born Jan. 17, 1833, died Jun. 1, 1909; George Francis Mason Evans, born Dec. 23, 1835, died May 6, 1910; Dinah Evans, born Aug. 6, 1839, died Jun. 11, 1870; and Martha Evans, born Jul. 12, 1839, died Sept. 17, 1876.

Aunoa (?) (Warren), Lareau

Aunoa was a Mangarevan girl who in 1934 met and fell in love with Sterling Andrew Warren on the island of Mangareva. Sterling had been shipwrecked on James Norman Hall's ship 'Pro Patria,' on the sandspit called Temoe, and had made his way with other Pitcairners to Mangareva. Sterling and Aunoa wished to be married, but authorities would not allow the marriage because Sterling could not produce a birth certificate (which was on Pitcairn Island). Captain Irving and Electa Johnson of the sailing ship Yankee called at Mangareva, and find the Pitcairners shipwrecked there, agreed to take them back to Pitcairn. One the voyage, because of the clearly true love Sterling and Aunoa showed for each other, Captain Johnson, as was allowed at sea, married the couple, she using the bridal gown Electa Johnson had used on her wedding day.

Buffett, John, thePeerage.com

John Buffett was born on July 16, 1797, at Hull, Bristol, Gloucestershire, England. He married Dorothy Young, daughter of Edward Young and Mauatua, on February 10, 1824, on Pitcairn Island. He died on May 5, 1891, at age 93 on Norfolk Island. John Buffett was a school teacher and carpenter. On December 10, 1823, and English whaler, the Cyrus, visited Pitcairn. John Adams, beginning to feel the infirmities of his age, asked the Captain if there was anyone on board ship who would be willing to stay and help him with the arduous task of teaching the many young people. Captain Hall kindly passed his request to his crew. John Buffett, a young man of 26, stepped forward and volunteered his services. Being bound by no family or home ties, he counted it 'no great sacrifice to remain'. Buffett had, in early youth, been apprenticed to a cabinet maker in Bristol. Of a roving nature, the sea held a strong fascination for him, and he left his earlier profession to sign on aboard a small Newfoundland trader, serving in the American merchant marine, went to London in 1821 to board the Penelope, and later the Impregnable. He had been shipwrecked in the Gulf of St. Lawrence, and later cast away on the coast of California. There, he was treated very kindly by an old Spanish commandante, who made every effort to convince him to stay. But Buffett made his way to Honolulu, where he signed on the Cyrus. It was only on Pitcairn that the wanderer had a vision of a congenial occupation and a peaceful home. He wrote many Pitcairn memoirs after the death of Adams (who had full editing rights of everything written while he was living), and is considered a reliable source. From 1823-1828, when George Hunn Nobbs arrived, the young school teacher, with his practical, easy-going approach to living, took an increasingly powerful role in the leadership of the island. As Adams declined in health, he was also looked to as the defacto religious leader. The period from 1829-1832 seems to have witnessed a growing division between followers of the impudent and increasingly devout Nobbs and the practical strong-willed Buffett. When Nobbs formed an 'alternate' school that attracted many of his pupils, Buffett quit teaching in disgust. The arrival of Joshua Hill in 1832 marked the beginning of a very trying period in the lives of Buffett, Evans, and Nobbs. Realizing that these three would be the most threatening to his plans and beliefs, Hill singled them out for special humiliation and punishment. Of the three, strong-willed Buffett was considered the most imminent threat. Hill, hearing of an incident that occurred five or six years before wherein Buffett had committed some wrong against the people of Pitcairn, obliged Buffett to undergo severe punishment, as he describes in his own words, 'After Mr. Hill's beating me over the head, breaking it in two places, and likewise my finger, I was suspended by my hands in the church, and flogged until I was not able to walk home. I was from this treatment confined to my bed for two weeks, and it was several weeks before I was able to walk or to use my hand.' The ill-treatment that the three endured reached a climax when they were forced to leave the island in March of 1834, on board the Tuscan. They were carried to Tahiti, where Buffett became mate of a trading vessel. He was later reunited with his family, but they were not able to return to Pitcairn until after Hill's forced departure in 1837. After Hill's departure, Buffett seems to have returned to teaching, and also to imparting his woodworking skills to his students, leaving the pastoral duties to Nobbs, and a cautious truce prevailed between the two. In fact, Buffett's introduction of woodworking to the curriculum brought several former pupils, disinterested in abstract education, who became very interested in learning more manual skills. From early 1848, Buffett left the island on a voyage of commercial enterprise,' perhaps to find a market for the higher and higher quality of carving and woodcraft produced by his students. He spent most of the period in Hawaii, and if he was successful, history does not relate. He returned on 10 July 1849 to much rejoicing. In April of 1856, Buffett went to Norfolk with the rest of the population. He returned to Pitcairn, but in July of 1872, he decided to return to Norfolk as a Minister to the people there 'who needed him.' Buffett emerges from the records as a curiously appealing personality, a man whose desire for virtue exceeded his ability. Despite his faults, he was extremely popular with his fellow Pitcairners due to his lack of aggressiveness, his good nature, and his willingness to share with everyone the woodworking skills that were eventually to become the basis for Pitcairn's chief industry. The children of John Buffett and Dorothy Young were Thomas Buffett, born January 3, 1825, and died October 18, 1900; David Buffett, born May 27, 1826, and died August 7, 1924; John Buffett, born July 21, 1827, and died June 23, 1906; Robert Pitcairn Buffett, born March 26, 1830, and died January 2, 1916; and Edward Buffett, born November 27, 1835, and died November 28, 1911. In a moment of rare levity for the time, Samuel would reach behind himself and touch the warm embers to Agnes' behind, with the result that Samuel got dumped in the pool. According to Island legend, this is why that pool is named 'OO-AA-OO.' Samuel and Agnes were among the second wave of returnees from Norfolk Island to Pitcairn Island in 1864. Christian, Allan Edgar, Pitcairn Miscellany 2, January 31, 1950, p.3

"As the sun was sinking heralding the rest of another Sabbath day on 28th January, our Brother Allan Edgar Christian, like a tired child, closed his eyes in sleep, thus ending his earthly pilgrimage. He was a New Year's gift to his parents, Daniel and Harriet Melissa Christian in the year 1879, and so he was well past his allotted span of life at the time of his death, reaching the age of 81 years. His wife, Dorcas Christian, had passed away 22 years before his death. They had four children. "Bro. Allan, before his previous illness, was known for his hard work, his interest for his fellow men whom he remembered personally in his prayers, and his little deeds of kindness such as mending clocks and watches for which he will be remembered. The day before his death my wife and I repeated the words of his favorite Scripture to him, and although he could not speak, yet his eyes brightened and his face lit up and his recognition of those words of Truth could easily be seen. I am certain he knew Him in whom he had believed, and was persuade that He is able to keep that which He committed unto Him against that day. Allan leaves to morn his loss, Fred and Maimi, the only remaining members of his family, Martha, Virginia and Gifford, his children, with nine grandchildren and two great-grandchildren, and two great grand-children. To these we offer our sincere sympathy and say, "Weep not for the end of all things is soon to come and the Resurrection morning is soon to dawn.'" - Pastor Rex Cobbin.

The following obituary about Ben Christian was written by Kenneth Bain and published in The Independent on October 5, 1992.
I first met him in 1968. Not quite on Pitcairn. A short tubby man climbed up the ship’s ladder and bounded over the gunwale. He was barefooted. His denims were faded, there was a long knife in his waist-belt and he wore a woollen skull cap with a pompom. He took this off as he reached the bridge. ‘Welcome,’ Ben always said to the captain. ‘Welcome to Pitkern (the Pitcairners’ pronunciation of their island home), and thank you f’r comin’.’
He was then and remained a gentle, kindly man, not typical of the disputatious individualism of many of his fellow Pitcairners. He was a model elder of the Seventh-day Adventist Church to which all members of the community adhere. He had only once previously been away from Pitcairn.
While devoted and hardworking, he had little formal education and suffered noticeably from lack of training in basic administrative skills. So he was seconded later that year to the British South Pacific Office in Fiji with which he corresponded at that time from Pitcairn.
Isolated though their island home may have been, Ben and Irma kept contact with the outside world through ham radio links - not least for a time with Tristan da Cunha, that other other even more remote island of the South Atlantic roaring forties.
With an annual budget of less than pounds 300,000 and no taxes to administer, except for token gun and bicycle licences, the Island Secretary’s financial responsibilities were not exacting. Ben would go to his tiny office at Adamstown Square about twice a week. It was quite enough; and the peculiarities of the virulent Pitcairn fairweather mosquitoes, which came out in the daytime and not at night, made his office the worst place on the island - so the people said.
The Island Secretary’s inward mail from a rare ship-day call was never less than eccentric. I looked through Ben’s files on one occasion. A woman’s club in Maine wanted a Pitcairner to discuss the proposition that ‘the saga of Pitcairn offers the world the way to a meaningful life’; a retired police officer from Chicago offered to command the Pitcairn land and seagoing forces for a modest supplement to his pension; and a 1970 Cadillac would be shipped freight-free to the roadless island in return for a monopoly franchise for the sale of Pitcairn Island carvings in the United States. A university in New Zealand indicated that 50 members of its Department of Linguistics wished to undertake an on-the-spot study of the Pitcairn language and its people; and a Brazilian student of anthropology sought to cohabit with any Pitcairn woman for the purpose of a thesis on the sex habits of island communities.
‘Not much here to worry about,’ said Ben, as he resumed his interrupted wood-carving. ‘We jus’ have to see that Pitkern goes on being Pitkern - for the sake of all the people.’

From the Pitcairn Miscellany: "It is with sadness that we record the death of Lloyd Christian on Pitcairn Island on February 23, 1986. (Editor). A close friend, Hugh Lloyd Christian, known to us as Jimma, or Jimmy, was born January 7, 1912, the son of George Lindsay Christian and Jane Elizabeth Christian on Pitcairn Island. Jimmy had four sisters and eight brothers, his only surviving brother, Everson Christian, is living in Auckland, New Zealand. On Sunday, February 23, tragedy struck Pitcairn as Jimmy Christian died of a heart attack, after he had climbed a very high Jacob's Ladder when visiting one of the passing ships that called at Pitcairn. My last words spoken to Jimmy were, 'Take care, Jimmy.' During the last month or so, prior to his death, we noticed that Jimmy was having dizzy spells, and when he was told that he should go to the Dispensary for a medical check up, he would reply, 'Nothing wrong.' We did not realize that his condition was serious. Jimmy was a popular man, liked by all, and his presence will be missed in this community, particularly in the church where he laboured for several years in various capacities, such as Deacon, Sabbath School secretary, and teacher in the children's division. He was always willing to help with any work connected with the church. Jimmy loved music and singing, and his voice will be missed wherever singing is heard. Jimmy was the Government Work Supervisor. He efficiently kept the Government buildings in good condition during his long term of service. In one of our conversations, Jimmy requested that when he died, he would like very little said about his life. - Irma Christian."
