Pitcairners on Bounty Day, Jan. 23, 2004 |
Who, and how many people, are living on Pitcairn Island today? That is an oft-asked question by those interested in the tiny Pacific isle. The answer to how many people are on the Island at any given time is a moving target. It may change several times in any month. This is because during any given time residents and visitors are coming to or going from the Island for many reasons. The coming or going from Pitcairn is always by ship, the island’s only transportation link with the outside world. The island’s quarterly-arriving supply-passenger ship Silver Supporter, a cruise ship, a visiting yacht, or a huge, roll-on-roll-off vessel carrying hundreds of automobiles might be the type of ship that brings or takes residents and visitors to and from Pitcairn Island.
Thanks to the research and careful preparation by a Pitcairn islander, the population of the Island is shown below, along with other information that is readily available. By number, Pitcairn’s population is updated at the end of each year in the monthly newspaper, the Pitcairn Miscellany. Subscriptions to Miscellany, an information-packed publication about the Island and the Pitcairn people, may be obtained by clicking on “Pitcairn Miscellany.”
