Biographical Note
Walter Charles Utt was born August 27, 1921, to Charles and Miriam Utt. His parents were both PUC graduates. Utt grew up between Massachusetts and California, as his father taught at both Atlantic Union College and PUC. As a child, Utt was a good student, although treatments for hemophilia often interrupted his studies. Utt received his Bachelor of Arts in History from Pacific Union College in 1942, and his Ph.D. from the University of California [Berkeley] in 1952. His dissertation was entitled "Decree Laws of the Third Republic," but his scholarly life was primarily occupied with research on Claude Brousson, a 17th century Huguenot martyr, and he traveled extensively in Europe to visit various Archives. Manuscripts, notes, and source materials related thereto are contained within the collection, as is the manuscript for one of the historical novels that emanated from his voluminous research on French Huguenots.
Utt taught history at PUC from 1951 to 1985, and he was the chair of the history department for 31 years. Utt taught a broad range of history courses, as well as denominational history and political science. He maintained an active interest in the controversies, scandals, and debates of the Adventist church, and the collection includes articles, papers, studies, and publications relative to this fascination. He actively corresponded with family, colleagues, friends, and students, leaving behind a significant record of his personal and professional life. Childhood drawings, writings, and correspondence are also part of the collection, as is Academic work from both his college and graduate school days. He traveled extensively, both within the United States and Europe, preserving travel memorabilia including receipts, entrance tickets, brochures, maps, etc. The collection encompasses a representation of Utt's interests, pursuits, and activities, professional as well as personal. Utt died in 1985, shortly before his 64th birthday. His unfinished manuscript of The Bellicose Dove was completed posthumously in 2003 with additions by Dr. Brian E. Strayer.

Administrative Information
Acquisition Information
Shortly after WCU's death in 1985, many of his professional papers were donated to the library by his widow, Martha Utt-Billington. Martha Utt-Billington donated the bulk of the remaining materials, many of which constitute personal papers, in July 2009. Other papers have trickled in over time from many sources, notably Dr. Bruce Anderson.
Processing Information
Series 1-9 and most materials donated pre-2009 were processed, arranged, and described by Allison Fox in approximately 2009-2010. An initial finding aid was created by Allison Fox. Processing of post-2009 donations was continued by Katy Van Arsdale in 2015-present. Finding aid was updated in 2015-2016
